Ten great films (plus a few more) you can stream on SBS right now

So many wonderful things on SBS On Demand. Ages ago I posted 10 great films you can stream on SBS right now, and they’re all still available, and now here are 10 more excellent films you can find on SBS On Demand (plus a few more I’ve previously reviewed). Note: This list is available to stream in Australia, if you’re elsewhere you’ll have to search your streaming services to see if or where these are available.

Juliette Binoche and Kristen Stewart in the Clouds of Sils Maria.

Clouds of Sils Maria

Starring Juliette Binoche and Kristen Stewart, this film by French film maker Olivier Assayas is about a famous actress confronting the fact she’s moving into a later stage in her career and what that means as she prepares to appear in the same play that started her career. Also really beautiful scenery.

Swiss Army Man

A strange, funny and unexpectedly poignant film about a man stuck on a dessert island (Paul Dano) with a corpse (Daniel Radcliffe), who he befriends and who helps him find his way back to his life.

Land of Mine

Still from the film Land of Mine

Set in Denmark after World War II, young German prisoners of war are set the dangerous task of clearing land mines under the command of a Danish Sergeant.

Bad Genius

Based on a true story, this entertaining Thai film is about some enterprising, and very smart high school students who make a living cheating on tests to help others get into top universities around the world, it’s a bit like a teenage heist movie.

Two Days One Night

In this film, Marion Cotillard shows why she’s one of the best actresses of her generation. It’s a simple story. A woman has two days and one night to convince her co-workers at a factory that they should give up a 1,000 euro bonus so that she can keep her job, a job which she desperately needs.

Slow West

Kodi Smit-McPhee in Slow West

Set in the old west of the USA, a young man (Kodi Smit-McPhee) hires an outlaw (Michael Fassbender) to help him find the woman he loves. An entertaining updated take on the western (although fun fact, it was actually shot in New Zealand).

Rooney Mara and Ben Mendelsohn star in this film, which I believe was based on a stage play about a woman who seeks out and confronts a man she had a relationship with… but of course, it’s way more complicated than that.

The Square

Scene from the movie The Square

An entertaining film about the renowned head curator of a Stockholm museum who is preparing to open a controversial show and has some serious personal and professional crises along the way. This film pokes fun at the more prestigious and pretentious side of the art world.

A Ghost Story

A truly beautiful and completely unique film about love, loss and grief. Starring Casey Affleck (who’s in a sheet for most of it) and a mesmerising performance by Rooney Mara.

Victor Polster in the movie Girl

A beautiful film about a transgender girl who wants to train to be a ballerina.

Also of note are these films, which I’ve reviewed in previous posts:

The Death of Stalin

The Guilty

So many more excellent films on SBS, so will post more in the near future (as well as some lists covering other streaming services).
